C., May 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Food and Drug Administration today announced that the price of Doxycycline, a widely used antibiotic in the United States for treating a variety of bacterial infections, will increase by $0.07 from July 1, 2012 to July 1, 2014. The increase will be determined based on the projected cost of treatment, and the results from a study that estimated the cost to be between $0.12 and $0.12 per dose.
Under the proposed rules, generic manufacturers will be able to market Doxycycline as the only generic equivalent of Doxycycline at a lower cost than the brand name. Generic manufacturers are required to submit a letter explaining their proposed pricing, stating that the price of the product will not exceed $30 per bottle.
The price of Doxycycline is based on a 30-day supply of the product, which will be priced at $0.12 per bottle. The cost of the entire product, regardless of the strength, will be between $0.06 and $0.08 per bottle.
Under the proposed rules, the proposed rules will allow the generic manufacturer to continue to market the product for a period of six months from the date of filing to the date of the proposed price increase. The cost of the entire product will be between $0.12 and $0.13 per bottle.
This announcement provides the FDA with the first indication that generic manufacturers will be allowed to compete effectively on price through competition from other manufacturers.
